Don’t let this year’s social distancing and limited face-to-face interaction put a damper on your Halloween! Have a blast on pumpkin day and follow these safety tips. The following suggestions are advisable for adults and provide helpful Halloween safety for children.

Here are a few safety tips for Halloween to keep in mind:

Host An Event

  • Consider these social distancing ideas to celebrate Halloween.
  • Whenever possible, participate in outdoor events such as a distance pumpkin carving.
  • Send digital Halloween invitations to organize a fun event and ensure everyone is on the same page about safety guidelines. Did you know that you can set a guest limit cap and limit the number of "plus 1s" so you can make sure your guest list doesn't get too big!
  • Encourage everyone to stay six feet apart from others. Do this with spacing out tables and chairs.
  • Ask guests to bring their own stuff -- lawn chairs, snacks, drinks, etc. This way you will minimize the number of people who will touch the same things.
  • No hugs! Encourage guests to give air hugs or air high-fives.
  • Hand sanitizer is your friend. Provide a fun-themed sanitizing station by decorating with skeleton hands or “germ-free ghosts.”

Costumes & Accessories

  • Wear a face mask -- but not with a costume mask as this could be a breathing hazard! If you're going to be around other people, opt for a costume that does not require a Halloween mask so you can wear the proper facial mask. Better yet, work a facial mask into your Halloween costume!
  • Wear comfortable shoes.
  • Wear warm clothing or bring a jacket.
  • Dress in bright colors (not black).
  • Wear a reflector on both your front side and back side, and even on your shoes to make drivers aware of your presence.

Trick-or-Treating

  • Only approach houses with lights on as more people than usual may not be comfortable with trick-or-treaters this year.
  • At your own home, help kids Trick or treat safely by encouraging one direction traffic with festive yard signs.
  • As always, be aware of your surroundings. If there is a large group on one side of the street, stay on the other side to minimize encounters with other people.
  • Kids should be supervised by a responsible adult when trick-or-treating.
  • Carry a glow stick and flashlight during trick-or-treating.
  • Only visit familiar houses in your neighborhood.
  • Trick-or-treat on streets with sidewalks.
  • Trick-or-treat early and return before dark.
  • Map out your trick-or-treating route in advance and make sure another family member knows about your plans.
  • Carry a cell phone in case of an emergency.
  • Go trick-or-treating with a buddy.
  • Check in at home at least one time.
  • Watch out for jack-o-lanterns that contain candles with flames.

Candy & Food

  • As always, never eat anything that isn’t wrapped.
  • Dispose of any candy with tears or holes in the wrappers.
  • Don’t share food. Be sure to bring your own food or eat before you go to an event.
  • Bring a bottle of water on your trick-or-treating adventure.
  • Don’t eat too much candy!

Share these important tips for a safe and fun Halloween with family and friends. Take Halloween safety for children seriously and give your kids important pointers. And if you can’t be with friends and family this year, be sure to send them Halloween eCards to celebrate. Have a wonderful and safe Halloween!
