Day 18: Read Together

On Day 18 of our 25-day challenge, we highlight an activity that can help you unwind and take you to faraway places in the blink of an eye. As with many of our assignments, this is something you may do already during the holiday season, but when we turn it into a shared experience, it becomes meaningful and memorable in a new way.

Today’s challenge is inspired by the tradition of Jolabokaflod, an Icelandic custom where people give each other books on Christmas Eve and spend the night reading. Books can be a wonderful way to relax and connect with loved ones during the holiday season, which is why your assignment today is to read together. Emphasis on the together part!

You do not need to be in the same physical location as your reading buddy to participate in today’s challenge. Here are a few different ways you can read with someone special.

  • In person: If you live with family or roommates, gather and read aloud all together tonight. Choose a children’s book or a favorite poem, chapter, or passage.

  • From afar: Reach out to a friend, decide on a holiday-themed book you’re both interested in, and agree to read it before the end of the year. Make a date to grab coffee or hop on Zoom to discuss the book afterwards. Check out this list of popular Holiday Books from Goodreads for inspiration.

  • Silently side by side: Set aside 30 minutes and read side by side with someone this evening. You don’t have to read the same book! This option is simply about spending cozy time with a loved one.
What will you read? Something new? Or a familiar favorite? Let us know! Share a link on social of your holiday read and use the hashtag #25DaysofHolidayMemories.

Day 18 is done! Tomorrow we’ll focus on how to easily share some love with friends and family who celebrate Hanukkah.
